Suicides
in India
It is
estimated that over 100,000 people die by suicide in India every year.
India alone contributes to more than 10% of suicides in the world. The
suicide rate in has been increasing steadily and has reached 11.2 (per
100,000 of population) in 1999 registering a 78% increase over the value
of 1980. Majority of suicides occur among men and in younger age groups.
Despite the gravity of the problem, information about the causes and risk
factors is insufficient.

The statistics presented below is based on the data available in National
Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 1999.

Suicide Rates from centrally administered Union Territories are not
shown in the above chart. Together, the seven Union Territories
contributed to 1.7% of the total suicides in India in 1999. The Union
Territories with suicide-rates for 1999 in brackets are as follows:
Pondicherry (10.88), Andaman & Nicobar Islands (34.92), D&N
Haveli (17.2), Chandigarh (8.06) Delhi (7.58), Daman & Diu (7.30)
and Lakshadweep (No suicides).
